Reynaldo Lopez
Reynaldo Lopez Sent to 60-day IL
Thu, Apr 3, 2025, 5:39 PM
Atlanta transferred Lopez (shoulder) to the 60-day injured list Thursday.
Analysis: Lopez is scheduled for arthroscopic surgery on his right shoulder, and a best-case scenario would see the right-hander return within a few months of the procedure. Until then, he'll concede his 40-man roster spot to Jason Delay, who was acquired by Atlanta on Thursday in a trade with the Pirates.
Jason Delay
Jason Delay Shipped to Atlanta
Thu, Apr 3, 2025, 5:34 PM
Atlanta acquired Delay from the Pirates on Thursday in exchange for cash and optioned him to Double-A Columbus.
Analysis: Delay was designated for assignment by the Pirates on Tuesday, but a move to Atlanta will allow him to reclaim a spot on a 40-man roster. However, he'll be demoted to Double-A upon joining his new organization and doesn't figure to serve as anything more than minor-league depth for the duration of the season. Reynaldo Lopez (shoulder) was transferred to the 60-day injured list in a corresponding move.
Pierce Johnson
Pierce Johnson Notches first hold of 2025
Thu, Apr 3, 2025, 11:45 AM
Johnson gave up a hit and a walk over two-thirds of a scoreless inning to record his first hold of the season in Wednesday's loss to the Dodgers. He struck out one.
Analysis: Entering the game in the sixth inning to protect a 5-3 lead is a long way from the high-leverage usage Johnson was expected to see this season, but Atlanta was desperate to secure its first win of 2025. How the setup crew was deployed ended up being moot when closer Raisel Iglesias served up a walk-off homer to Shohei Ohtani. Johnson has been sharp in the early going, posting a 0.00 ERA and 4:1 K:BB through his first 2.2 innings, and once Atlanta gets off the shneid, holds should start to pile up for him.
Nick Allen
Nick Allen Two hits in second straight start
Thu, Apr 3, 2025, 11:39 AM
Allen went 2-for-4 with a double, an RBI and a stolen base in Wednesday's loss to the Dodgers.
Analysis: Atlanta's entire lineup has struggled out of the gates en route to an 0-7 start, and while Orlando Arcia's lack of offense has been far from the biggest problem, the veteran has gone 2-for-13 (.54) with zero extra-base hits and five strikeouts in four appearances to begin the year. That's opened the door for Allen to get a look, and the former Athletic has responded with three hits and two steals while making two straight starts at shortstop. Allen is better known for his glove than his bat, but the same could be said for Arcia, and the former is four years younger. It's unlikely Atlanta will give up on Arcia that quickly, but his disappointing .625 OPS in 2024 may have undermined his job security more than anyone expected.
Raisel Iglesias
Raisel Iglesias Blows first save chance of 2025
Thu, Apr 3, 2025, 2:22 AM
Iglesias (0-1) took the loss and blew a save against the Dodgers on Wednesday, allowing one run on two hits while striking out two batters over one inning.
Analysis: With Atlanta off to an 0-6 start to the season, manager Brian Snitker didn't wait until the ninth inning to go to his closer as the team clung to a two-run, eighth-inning lead. Iglesias entered with one out and a runner on first base in that frame, inheriting a 2-0 count on Dodgers catcher Will Smith. Iglesias threw two more balls to put Smith on base but then got Tommy Edman to ground out to move within an out of escaping the jam. However, Max Muncy followed with a two-run, game-tying double, saddling Iglesias with a blown save. The veteran closer remained in the contest for the ninth, and he took the loss when Shohei Ohtani got to him for a walk-off homer. Iglesias went 67-for-75 in save chances over the past two regular seasons, so he figures to have plenty of leash despite Wednesday's stumble.
Bryce Elder
Bryce Elder Can't capitalize on early lead
Thu, Apr 3, 2025, 2:13 AM
Elder allowed three runs on three hits and two walks while striking out three batters over four innings in a no-decision against the Dodgers on Wednesday.
Analysis: Atlanta jumped out to a five-run lead through the top of the second inning, but Elder gave two runs back on a home run by Tommy Edman in the bottom of that frame. The Dodgers didn't score in the third, but Elder served up another long ball -- this time a solo shot by Michael Conforto -- in the fourth, and he didn't return for the fifth. The right-hander's start was his first of the season, which may partly explain why he was held to 70 pitches. Elder is in the rotation as a replacement for Reynaldo Lopez (shoulder), who landed on the injured list Monday. Lopez is likely to miss at least a few months, which could open the door for Elder to make additional starts, though he may lose his rotation role when Spencer Strider (elbow) is done with the rehab stint he began last weekend.
Michael Harris II
Michael Harris II Taking seat Wednesday
Wed, Apr 2, 2025, 4:20 PM
Harris is out of the lineup for Wednesday's game against the Dodgers.
Analysis: Harris started the first six games of the season but will receive Wednesday off after beginning the campaign in a 3-for-23 slump. Eli White will receive a start in center field for the series finale in Los Angeles.
Stuart Fairchild
Stuart Fairchild Starting Wednesday
Wed, Apr 2, 2025, 4:18 PM
Fairchild is starting in right field and batting seventh against the Dodgers on Wednesday.
Analysis: Fairchild will make his 2025 debut with Atlanta on Wednesday after being acquired from the Reds on Monday. With Ronald Acuna (knee) on the IL and Jurickson Profar suspended 80 games for violating MLB's policy on performance-enhancing substances, Fairchild could see semi-regular starts in the outfield corners. The 29-year-old appeared in 94 games for Cincinnati in 2024 and slashed .215/.286/.368 with 13 stolen bases, eight home runs and 30 RBI across 233 plate appearances.
Jarred Kelenic
Jarred Kelenic Idle Wednesday vs. lefty
Wed, Apr 2, 2025, 4:15 PM
Kelenic is out of the lineup for Wednesday's game against the Dodgers.
Analysis: Kelenic will get a chance to catch his breath Wednesday after going 3-for-19 with a home run and seven strikeouts through Atlanta's first six contests. His absence will move Bryan De La Cruz to left field, which opens up right field for Stuart Fairchild against Los Angeles southpaw Blake Snell.
Orlando Arcia
Orlando Arcia Resting Wednesday
Wed, Apr 2, 2025, 4:13 PM
Arcia isn't in the lineup for Wednesday's game against the Dodgers.
Analysis: Arcia will get a second consecutive day off after beginning the season 2-for-13 with five strikeouts. Nick Allen will fill in at shortstop and bat sixth.
Drake Baldwin
Drake Baldwin Sitting Wednesday
Wed, Apr 2, 2025, 4:12 PM
Baldwin is not in Atlanta's starting lineup against the Dodgers on Wednesday.
Analysis: The lefty-hitting Baldwin started in Atlanta's last two games, but he'll rest Wednesday as the Dodgers send southpaw Blake Snell to the mound. Chadwick Tromp will serve behind home plate and bat eighth.
Michael Petersen
Michael Petersen Dealt to Atlanta
Tue, Apr 1, 2025, 7:52 PM
Atlanta acquired Petersen from the Angels on Tuesday in exchange for cash and optioned him to Triple-A Gwinnett.
Analysis: Petersen was dumped from the Halos' 40-man roster Monday but will reclaim a roster spot with his new organization. The 30-year-old allowed 13 earned runs in 19.2 innings between the Dodgers and Marlins last season but dominated in Triple-A to the tune of a 1.64 ERA and 0.76 WHIP across 33 frames.
Reynaldo Lopez
Reynaldo Lopez Slated for surgery
Tue, Apr 1, 2025, 7:26 PM
Lopez will undergo arthroscopic surgery on his right shoulder, Mark Bowman of MLB.com reports.
Analysis: Imaging on Lopez's shoulder revealed only inflammation, but the 31-year-old righty will go under the knife to determine if he has any structural damage that needs correcting. Atlanta will have more information on the duration of Lopez's IL stint once the surgery is completed, but he shouldn't be expected to return for at least a couple of months.
Orlando Arcia
Orlando Arcia Sitting Tuesday
Tue, Apr 1, 2025, 5:53 PM
Arcia is absent from Atlanta's lineup against the Dodgers on Tuesday.
Analysis: Arcia went 0-for-3 with a strikeout in the series opener against the Dodger on Monday. He will get his second off day of the season with Nick Allen starting at shortstop and batting ninth.
Jesse Chavez
Jesse Chavez DFA'd by Atlanta
Tue, Apr 1, 2025, 12:46 PM
Atlanta designated Chavez for assignment Tuesday.
Analysis: The veteran right-hander inked a minor-league deal with Atlanta last week and had his contract selected from Triple-A Gwinnett on Monday, and he pitched later in the day versus the Dodgers, giving up a run on two hits and two walks over two innings. Chavez had a 3.13 ERA, 1.25 WHIP and 55:19 K:BB across 46 appearances for Atlanta last season, but his stay on the big-league roster early this year was brief.
Zach Thompson
Zach Thompson Joins major-league roster
Tue, Apr 1, 2025, 12:46 PM
Atlanta selected Thompson's contract from Triple-A Gwinnett on Tuesday, Mark Bowman of MLB.com reports.
Analysis: Atlanta is in need of a reliever capable of eating innings and Thompson is a theoretical fit since he totaled nine frames in two Grapefruit League appearances. The 31-year-old missed the entirety of the 2024 season while recovering from flexor tendon surgery and hasn't pitched in the big league since 2022.
Ronald Acuna Jr.
Ronald Acuna Jr. No outfield work yet
Mon, Mar 31, 2025, 7:27 PM
Acuna (knee) has not yet been cleared for outfield work or any cutting drills, David O'Brien of The Athletic reports.
Analysis: Manager Brian Snitker noted Monday that the club will evaluate the leadoff spot on a day-to-day basis after news broke earlier that Jurickson Profar had been handed an 80-game suspension by MLB for violating the performance-enhancing drug policy, and the skipper took this opportunity to give a brief update on Acuna, who would presumably slot in to the leadoff spot once given a clean bill of health. The 27-year-old is still expected to make his return to the field sometime in May, though a more exact timetable for his return should surface once he embarks on a rehab assignment.
Bryce Elder
Bryce Elder Recalled by Atlanta
Mon, Mar 31, 2025, 6:03 PM
Atlanta recalled Elder from Triple-A Gwinnett on Monday.
Analysis: The move corresponds with Atlanta placing Reynaldo Lopez on the 15-day injured list due to right shoulder inflammation. Elder didn't make the Opening Day roster after posting a 4.97 ERA and 1.50 WHIP in spring training, but he'll join Atlanta's rotation and is in line to start Wednesday against the Dodgers. He went 2-5 across 10 regular-season starts for Atlanta in 2024 with a 6.52 ERA and 1.63 WHIP across 49.2 innings.
Reynaldo Lopez
Reynaldo Lopez To IL with shoulder inflammation
Mon, Mar 31, 2025, 5:55 PM
Atlanta placed Lopez on the 15-day injured list Monday with right shoulder inflammation.
Analysis: Lopez's velocity was down throughout spring training, and while it ticked back up in his season debut against the Padres, he managed just one strikeout. It's the third arm-related stint on the IL for Lopez since last year's All-Star break. Bryce Elder has taken Lopez's spot on the roster and will start in his place Wednesday versus the Dodgers. Lopez will be eligible for activation in mid-April, but his absence is likely to extend beyond that.
Bryan De La Cruz
Bryan De La Cruz Making first start of 2025
Mon, Mar 31, 2025, 5:49 PM
De La Cruz is starting in right field and batting seventh against the Dodgers on Monday.
Analysis: De La Cruz came in as a pinch hitter twice during Atlanta's road series against San Diego. Monday will be his first start of the 2025 season, and he'll see everyday role in the outfield until Ronald Acuna (knee) comes back following Jurickson Profar's 80-game suspension by Major League Baseball for violating the performance-enhancing drug policy. De La Cruz split time with Atlanta and Miami across 149 regular-season games in 2024 and finished with a slash line of .233/.271/.384 with 21 home runs and 68 RBI in 621 plate appearances.
